Our mission to stop logging cartels in Papua New Guinea: Vanimo-Green District

Erick Kowa is seeking to represent the indigenous people of Vanimo-Green in the Papua New Guinea Parliament at the 2022 National General Elections. He intends to run as an independent candidate to fight against the system that has enabled powerful logging lobby groups to flourish while supporting major political parties in Papua New Guinea.

Find out why Erick is so passionate about this cause.

Vanimo-Green River District in Sandaun Province has been heavily logged over the last 60 years, but in the last decade rainforest loss has been particularly rapid. In 2010, the District had 1.25 million hectares of tree cover extending over 98% of its land area. A decade later, 4.10 kilohectares of tree cover had been lost, which is equivalent to 3.44 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere.

Standing up to environmental tyranny and corruption requires a global support base. This is your fight as much as it is the fight of 72,000 indigenous people in Papua New Guinea's Vanimo-Green District who are stewards of one the world’s largest rainforests. This cause is intimately linked to the survival of our indigenous peoples and our planet. We hope you will join this fight from where you are in the world.
